I forgot to thank you for your advise, but I doubt that Bahrain authorities will ever issue an IDL (actually IDP) to a person who has French driving license, since it is illegal. As all foreigners I drive in Bahrain (and everywhere else, except for France)with my national driving license and national IDL (both issued in France).

You, my Russian friend, forget one small detail, the IDL is valid ONLY if it has been issued in the same country as the driving license. Which means Spanish IDL will be valid with Spanish driving license, but Canadian IDL will be not. In other words being issued in Canada your IDL is valid only for canadians driving outside Canada.

The organizations authorized to expedite this kind of document are the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) and affiliated agencies. Nonetheless, the international document they provide is simply a translation of the person’s foreign driver’s license. Both documents must be presented to the authorities when there has been a traffic violation. The international driver’s license is essentially no more than proof that you have a driver’s license from your own country. On September 19, 1949, the United Nations established the International Driver Document to facilitate drivers’ travel in countries where language barriers create severe difficulties for both drivers and police officers. This document establishes a person’s right to drive in another country, including the United States. Although the document is accepted in 150 countries around the world, it is important to pay attention to the small print to understand that it does not “by itself” constitute a valid driver’s license, but is simply a translation into ten languages of the original driver’s license from the country one comes from. Therefore, the authorities will demand the original document to verify its validity. Before you acquire such a document, communicate with the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) to inquire whether such a document will serve the purpose in your particular case. Avoid falling for fraud; consult only with authorized agencies.

Poor idiots. Why do you by an IDL here? It is not a license, it is a TRANSLATION of your national license, and IDL is available from Automobile clubs all over the world. In USA you can get one in AAA with no hassle, in Brazil from Automovel Club do Brasil and so on. All countries have a place where you can get an IDL.
